Two days.
Two fucking days and Adriel was still unconscious, and I had spent the most of those two days pacing and snapping at everyone who came to my door. I wouldnât listen to anyone who told me that he was okay, just sleeping off having his power turned in on him, like a burn out, and only stopped when a fucking exhausted looking Adair had come to tell me that Adriel would be fine.
I knew that I wouldnât believe a word until I saw it with my own two eyes.
On the third day, I couldnât stand to stay holed up in my room and I went out to the courtyard to burn off some energy. I wasnât stupid though, and now that both Abraxas and Saskia were out to get me, I knocked on Verenaâs door and told her where I was going, the angel lifting her brows as if she couldnât believe I was actually being all responsible and shit and letting her know where I would be.
I may have given her a one finger salute.
Going outside, I stood for a moment, letting the wind chill my skin and I took in some air. I remembered how it had felt coming out here, after being confined to the dungeons for almost three years. I was so consumed with staying alive and finishing my mission that I hadnât taken enough time to soak in the fact that I should have been dead, but instead I was here, heart still beating, even if I was only alive because the Imperium wished it.
It just gave me more time to figure out how to get close enough to try and kill her again.
I had never been one of those soldiers who liked drills and coordinated fighting practice, however, Adriel had shown me that doing the repetitive moves, feeling the weapon as an extension of your person, could make you a better fighter. Walking over to where the kendo sticks were, I picked up two, then positioned myself in the centre of the open space and began to move.
There was no stiffness in my shoulder, no ache in my ribs. Whatever Adriel had done when his power had healed me had taken all the pain away. I lost myself in the routine, mimicking the strikes and movement that I had committed to memory having watched Adriel and dammit if he wasnât right and I felt good, right, balanced.
I snapped my hands in, bringing the kendo sticks to my sternum, exhaling a breath. Sometime during the exercise, my eyes had closed, and my senses seemed to expand because I knew I was no longer alone in the courtyard.
Prying open my eyes, I let my lips curve into a smile as I saw Zephyr standing in the doorway, watching me. He had this cautious expression on his face, and I wasnât sure why. Then it dawned on me that he might be worried that I was mad about what happened the night I came back to the citadel.
